Candidate email verification helps you focus on genuine candidates by asking them to submit a verification code after they apply.

The process requires a person to open their email, retrieve a one-time code, and enter it on a page linked in the email. With email verification, you’ll know that a real, live person intentionally applied to your position—not AI or a bot.

How candidate email verification works

An admin can enable candidate email verification in their company settings. When enabled, email verification will be activated for all positions. A new stage, called “Email Unverified,” will be added to your position pipelines.

When a candidate applies for a position through your career portal, they’ll receive an email with a four-digit verification code and will appear in the Email Unverified stage of your pipeline.

When the candidate clicks the link in their email and enters the code, they’ll be moved to the Applied stage in your position’s pipeline and the event will be recorded in the questionnaires tab of their profile.

Notes:

  • Email verification will only be sent to candidates who apply through your career portal, not to candidates added manually or who were in your pipeline before it was enabled.

  • If a candidate’s responses to an application questionnaire disqualify them, email verification won’t be sent.

  • If a candidate’s responses to an application questionnaire move them to another stage (other than Disqualified), they’ll start in the Email Unverified stage. When they complete verification, they’ll move to the correct stage based on their answer.

  • You can’t customize or remove the Email Unverified stage from position pipelines. You can move, delete, or run Breezy Intelligence tools for candidates in that stage.

  • You can manually move candidates out of the Email Unverified stage, but their verified status will not change. You can resend a verification email manually from their candidate profile.

  • For reporting purposes, a candidate counts as “applied” as soon as they submit their application, even while in the unverified stage.

How to enable or disable candidate email verification

Candidate email verification is enabled by default for accounts created after March 4, 2026.

An admin can enable or disable candidate email verification in their company settings.

  1. Click the gear icon ⚙️ in the left sidebar.

  2. Click Company Settings.

  3. Click General in the left sidebar.

  4. Click Candidate Data near the top of the screen.

  5. Find Candidate Email Verification and toggle it on or off.

  6. Click Save Changes.

Once enabled, the “Email Unverified” stage will be added to position pipelines when new candidates apply through your career portal. New candidates will appear there until they submit their verification code or are manually moved to another stage.

Note: If you disable email verification while candidates are in the Email Unverified stage, they will stay in that stage and can be moved manually. New applicants will not receive a verification email and will appear in your Applied stage.

How to request verification manually

If a candidate hasn’t responded to the automatic verification email, you can resend it from their candidate profile.

  1. Open the candidate’s profile.

  2. Click the More menu (three dots) and select Resend Verification Email.

  3. Click Yes, please to confirm.

The candidate will receive a verification code in their email. When they submit the code, their profile will be updated and they’ll move to the Applied stage of your pipeline.
